Old San Juan
Old San Juan, a historical jewel, settled in 1521, is the oldest
historic district under the U.S. flag. Old San Juan is a "must see"
attraction. Most of its fortresses and urban squares, government
buildings and colonial houses have been restored. A walk along its
fascinating cobblestoned streets may initiate a journey to the past.
You could visit its museums, art galleries, fortresses, plazas, stores,
"duty-free" jewelry stores, and "gourmet" restaurants.
Ponce de León was its first governor before he departed to found the
state of Florida. Thereafter, for three consecutive centuries Old
San Juan was constantly attacked by foreign military powers
interested in conquering the small but interesting island of Puerto
Rico. It was in 1898, after the Spanish-American War that Spain
ceded the island of Puerto Rico to the United States.
To the south of Old San Juan you find the cosmopolitan city with its
sophisticated museums, admirable architectural houses, mega shopping
centers, restaurants, hotels and casinos, nightclubs and concert halls.
But above all, you find its magnificent beaches --- from Condado to
Isla Verde --- which are perfect for sunning and bathing.
Viejo San Juan
La ciudad más antigua de la isla y la más antigua de la nación
norteamericana. Cuenta con fuertes, plazas, casas coloniales,
castillos y edificios históricos que datan a los tiempos de la
conquista española del nuevo mundo. La muralla de San Juan
tomó más de 100 años en construirse para proteger los siete
bloques de urbanización histórica.
Para el 1521, Juan Ponce de León fue su primer gobernador
hasta que fue a descubrir la Florida. Por los siguientes tres
siglos, el Viejo San Juan fue asediado por los poderíos militares
europeos, hasta que en el 1898 se desató la Guerra Hispano-
americana, fecha en que los Españoles cedieron la isla de
Puerto Rico a los Estados Unidos.
El Viejo San Juan, como bien se reconoce, es una "joya
histórica" con sus calles adoquinadas, museos, iglesias de las
más antiguas de América, sus plazas y casas coloniales, sus
tiendas de todas clases, sus joyerías "duty free", restaurantes
"gourmet" y galerías de arte. En fin aquí usted encuentra todo
lo fascinante del viejo y nuevo mundo.
El area metropolitana de San Juan, muy conocida ciudad
cosmopolita del Caribe, se extiende por unas millas hacia
el Sur dónde usted puede encontrar playas, urbanizaciones
con sabor arquitectónico, centros comerciales de calidad
mundial, restaurantes "gourmet", casinos, hoteles,
boutiques, discotecas y centros de Bellas Artes.
